My work has everything to do with my environment or the environment in which a work will live: the colors and randomness of nature, the patterns and textures of immediate and past cultures.
Bartels' installations are based on the historic tile work done on the island in the 1920s. He sees Catalina Island as a wonderful resource with a great history in ceramics. The colors of the period and the unique shapes from the area have inspired and influenced the direction of Bartels' art. His website is at www.marlobartels.com.

As Marlo Bartels creates tile mosaic tables and benches, he is working on another project: installing his custom ceramic tile work on Catalina Island. The creativity that came out of a historic Catalina ceramic studio has influenced many artists. Bartels' dream is to revive it and keep it going for future generations.
