Atara Baker

"I am painting nature. I want my pieces to look ancient, like they are part of the earth."

Atara BakerBorn in Israel, Atara Baker traveled and studied art in Italy, France, England and the U.S. before devoting ten years of her life to South Africa. Living in Johannesburg through the 1970s, Baker was profoundly affected by the native tribes and fascinating cultures. Now living in the U.S., Baker continues to reveal her ties to Africa in her mixed-media paintings.

Baker layers South African newspapers until a textural surface is formed and coated with an earthy palette. After layering, she scrapes the surface with a palette knife, carving and gouging until the composition is complete.

Atara has a website at www.w3art.com/index.html.
