| Integration, understanding, the Middle Way. Every
moment is an opportunity to create.
Contrast and juxtaposition characterize the
abstract work of Barbara Bartholomew. In paintings that are predominantly black and white,
Bartholomew incorporates philosophical dialogues and artistic traditions from varied times
and places to articulate balance created by contrasting elements. Traditional Chinese art
dependent on the calligraphic line is combined with the forceful brushwork of Abstract
Expressionism, while Taoist Mysticism is considered alongside Emersonian
Transcendentalism. These sources of inspiration have contributed to the creation of images
that are dense and richly painted in oil with curving brushstrokes, thick impasto and
moody overtones.
