Brian Sikes

Paintings by Brian Sikes

"I have long been concerned with how we understand, categorize and utilize the physical world to accommodate human needs, as well as how that knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation."

Brian Sikes examines worldly concepts by appropriating images from a variety of source materials: 19th-century illustrated encyclopedias, science textbooks, diagrams, photographs and even geographical surveys. The finished work, with its juxtaposed and overlapping visual references, not only incorporates an invigorating sense of movement, but also provides a rich and complex view of human life and experience.

There is more information about him at DePaul University. He is on the faculty there.
