Doug E.L. Haynes

Paintings by Doug  Haynes

"I try to convey the uncluttered beauty of the world."

Though not a monk, Doug Haynes has spent the past six years working and living in a Benedictine monastery. The quiet meditative lifestyle has transferred seamlessly into his passionate iconic works and hushed still life.

He paints each image using a blend of traditional techniques (painting from cartoons passed down for hundreds of years) and personal nuances (using acrylic paint and watercolor rather than tempera) that focus on how light interacts with objects rather than simply on the objects themselves. Each work reflects in its simplicity and quietude the notion that painting an icon is an act of prayer.
