Koichi Urano

Paintings by Koichi Urano

The medium is the message, Meluchan said. The medium cannot be conveyed as the message by the media.

Purposely trying to confound the viewer, Koichi Urano attempts to erase the distinction between originals and reproductions in his acrylic paint paintings. Each is meant to fool the eye, a trompe loeil. Two images lie one on top of the other, identical but for their originality: one is the master and one a reproduction. Combining the Wests historic adherence to realism with the Easts reverence for the evocative, Urano challenges the viewer to study the painting, decipher its secrets and engage in its colors, shadows and technique.

Koichi has a website at chriserg.tripod.com/urano.htm.
