Laurie Jiobu

Paintings by Laurie Jiobu

"These paintings are about the light that shines through open spaces. It pours in, seeps through, glows. It illuminates darkness."

Jiobu's paintings are simple stripes, but even more they are icons of hope. A reminder of the positive energy of light and all that it symbolizes.

For each work, Jiobu builds up alternating stripes with molding paste to cast slight shadows. The raised bands, painted with alkyd medium, are glossy while the alternate bands are painted with a matt beeswax. The resulting interplay creates a surface that both absorbs and reflects light.

The geometry, repetition and simplicity in Jiobus paintings are inspired by the creative spirit of Shaker crafts. Taking us inward to a meditative state of self-reflection.
