"While roads or river beds have occurred in my work from the beginning, they have seldom moved so fast or so precipitously through the painting or drawing as now."
She began capturing these windswept landscapes with soft-pencil drawings, but soon moved to oil to better depict the rich color and texture of the broad sky and rolling hills. Working within the expressionist tradition, Chaffee presents not the specific site, but rather what she sees in the landscape. |

Marta Chaffee is intrigued by the colors and shapes found along two well-traveled California highways: the Pacific Coast Highway and Interstate 5. She travels these roads making sketches, notes, and panoramic photographs that she will take back to her studio to work from.
