Inspired by Russian icons and medieval Italian paintings, Theresa Abel incorporates traditional techniques in her modern compositions presenting a wicked twist on the subjects of ancient religious tales. The luxurious colors and luminous gilding of each painting are applied to the panel as part of a laborious process. First the panel is covered with six to eight layers of smoothed gesso upon which Abel's compositional drawing has been transferred. Metal leaf is then carefully applied, followed by an underpainting in oil or acrylic paint.
